Indian State and Society

For a student of political science, the pressure to get a stronghold over his/her own state's history, politics and economics is very high.

I was a student of political science (hons.) in my Bachelors. And, then took it further with Masters in International Relations. While, pursuing both these academic degrees, one thing got clear that studying one's own state itself is endless.

India is a huge state and occupies a massive area in the region of South Asia. The history that the state has and the changes it is undergoing constantly, for a student of Indian politics, deciphering what to read on state and society of India is therefore a gigantic task.

Intending to relieve a bit of that pressure, I present a listing of fundamental books that covers the following topics for understanding the Indian state and society:
  • Concept of western and non-western state system
  • State formation
  • Historical genealogies of Indian state
  • Institutional planning and development
  • Industrialization
  • Agrarian reforms
  • Liberalization and Indian economic reforms
  • Democracy and decentralization
  • Rise of identity politics - caste, religion, language
  • Minority rights
  • Women's rights
  • Social movements
  • Federalism and pluralism
  • Globalization and its impact on state formation
