Top 5 Compelling Reasons for Studying Abroad

Studying in a different country, far away from home sounds exciting and daunting at the same time.


So, you need some really good and compelling reasons to invest the hard-earned money as well as time on studying something substantial abroad.


During my second post-graduation in London (UK), I had the pleasure to meet many international students in my University - University College London.


Our coffee-time discussions ranged from our academic /professional backgrounds, future aspirations, cultural differences and world issues.


But a common question which bound us all even today is why the heck we flew thousands of kilometers from our home, far away from family and friends to study in an alien country?


With the aim to share my experiences and help others in need, I am starting a series of posts dedicated to all the issues pertaining to Studying Abroad.


The first question is always what is the need? and so is today's discussion which addresses top 5 compelling reasons for studying abroad!

1. Lack of Course in Home Country - One of the reasons for you to get out of your comfort zone and choose to study abroad is the lack of a specific course or novel specialization that you wish to pursue in your home country. A lot of times, your home country might have a similar kind of course but the best one is in another country. So, no need to compromise and you can acquire the best of knowledge abroad. After all, you are spending the resources of your life and one should spend them on the best possible option.
2. Recognition and Accreditation - Many technical courses are accredited by well-known institutions. These accreditations are well received not only in the home country of the university but are valued worldwide. Being an alumnus of such a course is going to help you throughout your professional life. However, make sure to check the world ranking of that university and compare with similar programs in other universities. For instance, you can refer to some well-known bodies like the Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, etc. because they publish yearly global university rankings based on several diverse metrics.
3. Good Teaching Faculty - Whether you are want to study in your home country or abroad, knowledge about the teaching faculty and reviews from the existing students is imperative. Take time to find out which university has the most reputed teaching staff in your study area along with quality infrastructure to support your study/research. In today's age when educational institutes are mushrooming around us, attracting skilled, qualified and experienced teaching faculty is not easy. It is therefore important to add here that excellent infrastructure is the foundation. Getting a chance in a quality institutions with skilled mentors will not just add to your knowledge but will make the education process exciting and interesting!
4. Bright Career Prospects - Choosing to study in a well known and well accredited course undoubtedly increases your chances of landing a good job. Also, while researching potential universities, try to gather information about their career services. Most universities nowadays offer career counselling, tutorials and mock interviews to prepare you well for the job market.
5. Desire to Settle Down in a Particular Country - Another crucial reason for many to study abroad is their dream to settle in that country. So, studying in a country becomes a preliminary step for them. Studying equips you with the knowledge the country wants you to have and enables you to understand national regulations on job, visa and work permit, etc. Besides, be active enough to have a part-time job in your area of interest. Remember, networking in a new country is required to stay updated.

While, this list is not an exhausting one and there are many other reasons, but these 5 reasons to study abroad has been most recurrent.


If you are a millionaire and/or don't give a damn about the above mentioned factors, choose a country whose culture you want to explore. Trust me, it happens!

Hello from the Land of Santa Claus!!

Professionally I am a Conservation Architect. That means I spend most of my time snooping around dilapidated and haunted buildings. I love the smell of old damp lime washed walls. Sorry to put you off with all the unpleasant details.

Now for the fun facts. I have been living in this extremely cold socialist country (its Finland, for the people who are still guessing!) for a few years now. But I was also in London doing my second post-graduation (University College London) and working on a few projects for the last 1.5 years.

Being a culture enthusiast, I have travelled far and wide in Europe learning the culture and trying the unique local cuisines. Yes, I am a foodie too!
