Afghanistan became an independence country on 19 August 1919 after the signing of the Anglo-Afghan Treaty which ceased Afghanistan from being recognized as a protectorate of Britain.

Afghanistan's flag has undergone a lot of upgradations. However, the current flag is made up of 3 equal parts - black, red and green. With an emblem in white which overlaps all the 3 colors.

Each of the vertical color bands in the flag signify a particular aspect of the Afghanistan history.
  • Black reminds the people about Afghanistan's dark and tortuous past filled with war and difficulties.
  • Red symbolizes the fight and bloodshed of the people of Afghanistan for independence.
  • Green offers hope in religion and prosperity for all.
The emblem features a mosque with wheat sheaves on both sides.

Inside the mosque, Mihrab (architectural mark) is drawn to indicated the direction of the Mecca (city in Saudi Arabia).

Afghanistan is an Islamic state and has a holy phrase inscribed right at the top of the emblem, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his Prophet, and Allah is Great". Below the inscription are sun rays which presumably says that light must shine on the words of the inscription forever.

The lower part of the emblem has the year 1919 mentioned as well as the name "Afghanistan".
